The wise, wizened wizard Llaroth coughed again, bringing forth a heavy
clod of enchanted phlegm. The swordsman Rothmer and the leprechaun
Oughaugh exhanged a look of concern. Not even a powerful wizard like
Llaroth was immortal, and with each flurry of wet, grinding coughs, the
old mage drew nearer to his journey into the realms of shade. He hadn't
much time left.
"I haven't much time left," Llaroth gasped,
redundantly. "But hark well, for the challenge I lay before you must be
met, lest all of Enmegore fall under the mailed fist of - hack, hack! - forget it, forget it. Just listen.
the spires of Polln, deep in the mountains of Throthathery, where even
dragons dare not tread without some serious backup, lies a
scarlet-ringed cavern hewn from the eternal rock. Within it lies a
prize of great power. To retrieve this treasure, you must overcome the
most trying travails, conquer the unconquerable beasts, and bear the
unbearable sorrow. Many times, the demons of despair will endeavor to
turn you from your path. But you must secure this treasure before the
Dark Forces capture it. Enmegore's very existence hangs in the
balance." He paused, letting his words hang in the air. Smoke curled
ceilingward from the cone of incense at Llaroth's bedside. A moment
"Well, don't you want to know what it is?" Llaroth finally asked.
"Oh, sorry, yeah, sure," Oughaugh replied.
"We thought you were going to keep going there," Rothmer explained. "Like, you were just pausing for dramatic effect."
with great effort, continued. "Many are its names, but men of this age
know it as the Targus Universal Notebook AC/DC Adapter. The Creator in
his wisdom designed it to meet the power needs of today's
high-performance notebook PCs, including a variety of tips for a use
with <a href="http://www.woot.com/files/compatchart070607.pdf">a wide range of notebooks</a>.
Its compact profile and the included DC adapter render it most amenable
to mobile use. You can even get tips for other electronic devices (not
included), although you will not find them in the scarlet cavern. Go
now, to the East, to begin your quest! Time runs short!"
two paladins looked at each other, eyebrows raised in puzzlement.
"Forgive me if I speak out of turn, Wise One," Oughaugh finally asked.
"I'm having trouble seeing how the fate of Enmegore turns on a notebook
adapter, even a great one like this."
"It does seem weird," Rothmer added.
"I'd tell you, but then I'd - hack hack!
- have to kill you," Llaroth intoned. "I'm kidding, of course." The
wizard had always had a pretty cornball sense of humor. "No, really,
to explain the mysteries of the Targus and its role in our world would
take far more years than you mortals will be alive. Let's just say it's
a wizard thing - you wouldn't understand." He looked expectantly at the
others, but they didn't seem to think that line was very funny, either.
"As I said, go now, to the East, to begin your quest! And if I die
before you return, well, nice knowing you and everything."
the two rode easterly, Rothmer upon his horse and Oughaugh upon his
toad, the leprechaun finally said what they'd both been thinking.
"Listen, Rothmer, does this whole quest make any sense to you?"
swordsman's brow furrowed. "No, not at all. Llaroth's been pretty out
of it for a few years now. I don't know about you, but I'm starting to
think that fighting our way through the orc-wolves of Throthathery is a
pretty major inconvenience to go through, just for some random notebook
"Amen to that," Oughaugh agreed. "Whaddya say we forget this whole thing and head into
Dsygginvale for a little R & R? They've got this new casino where the hostesses walk around with exposed ankles."
I gotta see," Rothmer chuckled. The pair set a course for the fleshpots
of Dysgginvale, hoping Llaroth wouldn't bust out some kind of
